Easter weekend

... is jam-packed in NSW but lighter on elsewhere. It's a good weekend away darn sarth in the West at Albany and Denmark. And the 1st Inaugural Rip Race takes place across Port Phillip Heads in Victoria.

Easter Sat, April 4 - Nowra Culburra e, Terrigal e (NSW), Port Phillip Heads (Vic), Albany (WA)
Easter Sun, April 5 - Pacific Palms e, Queenscliff e (NSW), Denmark (WA)

We're taking online entries to all four NSW swims over the Easter weekend.

Nowra Culburra - Tilbury Classic

nowra culburra tilbury pano 2013

The first time we did this swim, awgies were giving the briefing in the surf club, and as they directed punters attention to the course, all heads turned towards the clubhouse windows, and an enormous dolphin leapt out of the waves in the break in front of them. It couldn't have been scripted better. It's a beautiful swim around Tilbury Headland in good, interesting water. If seas get up, alternative course is in the lee of the headland in Tilbury Cove. It's a good guarantee. This beach is almost right at the spot where the east coast is closest to the edge of the continental shelf. A lovely course and a beautiful beach. It's where Max Dupain took his photograph of The Sunbather.

It's an easy drive from Sydney, too, made easier recently by further work on the Princes Highway around Gerringong.

The forecast
  • Weather - Cloudy, shower or two, 14-20C (Willy Weather)
  • Wind - 15 knots SE SW (Hurley Surf)
  • Swell - 2.6 ft, from SSE (Hurley Surf)
  • Tide - High 9:08am, 1.5m (Willy Weather)

Online entries to the Tilbury Classic close at 3pm on Good Fridee, April 3... Click here

Terrigal Swims

terrigal 11 01

One of the gems of the NSW coast - a North (Central) Coast, north-facing beach. This means that Terrigal is almost always protected from the worst conditions. It's a gentle break with generally smooth water in the mornings for this swim. Plenty to do there and an easy drive from Sydney.

The forecast
  • Weather - Cloudy 17-22C (Willy Weather)
  • Wind - 23 kn SE (Willy Weather)
  • Swell - 3 ft, SSE (Hurley Surf)
  • Tide - High 8:42am 1.6m (Willy Weather)

Online entries to the Terrigal swims close at noon on Good Fridee, March 27... Click here

Pacific Palms, Lower North Coast

pacific palms tj 11 01

One of our fave days out of the year, at another North Coast, north-facing beach, phenomenally sheltered from the worst of the weather and swell. It's a noon start for the main swim, and this year they have a new, shorter, 600m swim on before the main event. Be aware, race-day entry cut-off time is earlier this year: 10am, awgies tell us, with 600m starting at 11am and 1.5km at noon.

The forecast
  • Weather - Showers, 18-24C (Willy Weather)
  • Wind - 14 knots SW (Hurley Surf)
  • Swell - 2.6ft, SSE (Hurley Surf)
  • Tide - High 8:42am 1.6m (Willy Weather)

Online entries to the Pacific Palms swims close at 3pm on Easter Saturday, April 4... Click here

Queenscliff - Swim for Saxon

queenscliff pano

Two distances at Queenscliff, the only swim in Sydney over the Easter Weekend, run in memory of Saxon Bird, the lifesaver who lost his life at the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships on the Gold Coast in 2010. It's a beautiful beach, at the northern end of Steyne Beach from Manly.

The forecast
  • Weather - Showers, 18-24C (Willy Weather)
  • Wind - 14 knots SSE (Hurley Surf)
  • Swell - 2ft, SSE (Hurley Surf)
  • Tide - High 8:44am, 1.6m (Willy Weather)

Vanuatu

June - Port Vila, then Espiritu Santo Swim Week - Two swims in Port Vila, then a week of ocean swimming and other escapades on Santo, Vanuatu's Adventure Island. Do either or both legs. Visiting as a tourist is one of the best ways to support Vanuatu, cleaning up after Tropical Cyclone Pam. Port Vila was hit pretty hard, but Santo was pretty much unscathed and life continues as usual. Air Vanuatu's schedules are a little restricted until June 25: they're flying from Sydney on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, and twice weekly from Brisbane between April 17 and June 25...
