From the Awgie...

Well, unfortunately it wasn't third time lucky for the organisers of the Gerringong SLSC Captain Christie ocean swim on Sunday 4 Jan 15. Despite it being a lovely sunny day, the residual slop and conditions created by the previous night's howling nor'-easter forced a change of course down to our picturesque alternative course at Seven Mile Beach, Gerroa. It was all hands on deck as buoys, boats and tents were moved down on the back of trucks and in the backs of utes.

We were greeted by very un-Captain Christie like conditions with a smooth sea however the sea temp was a chilly 17.6C after being cooled significantly by the nor'-easter. The crowd essentially took over the small town and, after being led off by the Stand-Up paddle board category, our swimmers set off towards Black Point. It was a spectacular sight watching a long line of yellow capped heads stream out into the ocean. This is unusual to see as, unless you follow the competitors around the cliffs, you lose sight of them on the regular course.

Given the water temperature, the course was reduced slightly to 1.5km and our first swimmer, Kazimir Boskovic, finished in just over 16mins. The first female swimmer, 14 yr old Abby Slaughter, completed the swim in 19 min. A great effort by both competitors.

248 finished the swim and, whilst some may have been disappointed by the change of course, I think most were challenged by the cooler water conditions.

After packing up at Gerroa, we had a good rollout of people back at the clubhouse for BBQ, drinks, lucky number prizes, the fish auction and the presentation (and of course the swimmers' complimentary bottles of whisky as they follow in the footsteps of Captain William Bartholomew Christie).

Thanks to all the competitors, especially those who travelled to come and have a go at our little swim, the world famous Captain Christie... Hope to see you next year.
