Swims this weekend

malabar patrons 1602Oceanswims.com is taking entries for the Murray Rose Malabar Magic on Sundee.

Rainbow Club patrons Mark Speakman, Louise Sauvage, Daniel Kowalski and James Pittar are swimming as a Rainbow Club team at the Malabar Magic on Sundee.

Malabar forecast

Forecast – Sunny with a chance of showers, 20-26C, 5-10 per cent chance of rain during the morning
Tide - Dropping from high 1.7m at 8:21
Wind – "Gentle" breeze from SE, easing from 20kmh at 8am to 12 kmh at 11am.
Swell – 1.6m swell from SE offshore, but little of that (less than a metre on the real beaches) will find its way into Long Bay (Malabar)
Water - 22C at the moment. Still very noice.

Malabar is a special swim: it's an ocean beach that does not present a surf break, and it's run directly by a charity, not a surf club, to raise funds for its own operations. There aren't many of those around.

Because they're not a surf club, the Malabar awgies, The Rainbow Club, do not have the resources of a surf club to call on for logistical support, principally a legion of qualified surf life savers and their rescue gear. They get much of that from North Bondi SLSC, of which the swim's late patron, Murray Rose, was a member. Lots of Murray's cobbers still help out on the day. It's a noice gesture of support and co-operation. The swim now is named in Murray's honour, the Murray Rose Malabar Magic.

Murray was one of our heroes when we were littlies, as he was of pretty well every Stra'an youngster of the 50s and 60s. It was nice to find, when we met Murray later in life, that he fulfilled the ideal image that we had held of him since the 50s. As we swim around Long Bay on Sundee, we can all spare a thought for what Murray worked for with this event, and for Murray, himself, who died in April 2012.

The Rainbow Club exists to teach disabled kids to swim. This swim is one of their major fundraisers for the year. And because it's held in Long Bay – a very long bay, a bit like a fjord without the mountains – it offers a long, smooth course, with gentle swell but no nasty surf. So it offers possibilities for many swimmers who are not confident in a break, and for every swimmer who likes a stretch out.

Two distances offered: 1km and 2.4km.

Online entries to the Murray Rose Malabar Magic close on oceanswims.com at 3pm on Sat'dee, February 20. More info and to enter online... Click here

Manly cancelled

Note that the Manly swim, postponed from November to Sat'dee, February 20, has been cancelled altogether. The awgies, Manly Life Saving Club, aim to pick a new date next season.

swimfasstCraig Riddington's SwimFassst

The ironman, Craig Riddington, has invented a device that could make you a much better swimmer. We've tried it, and it makes us better.

SwimFasst is designed to help you grab and pull more effectively through the water, with better body position. You can buy SwimFassst by itself, or with a couple of lessons from Riddo himself to get you iinto the swing of SwimFassst.
