gerringong seven mile beach

Nine swims this weekend

Now, with all that palaver out of the way (or pavlova in some households), let's get down to business...

  • Sat, Jan 2 – Cottesloe (WA), Port Sorell (Tas), Port Fairy (Vic)
  • Sun, Jan 3 – Gerringong, Newport (NSW), Pt Lonsdale, Phillip Island, (Vic), Albany (WA)
  • Mon, Jan 4 – Waihi Beach (NZ)

Quirky rusticana

This is a rustic, quirky swim: replicating a bet amongst crew of a 19th century merchantman moored in Gerringong's Boat Harbour: Capt Christie swam along the rock platform to Werri Beach, the prize a bottle of whuskey. In memory, all finishers (of boozy age) receive a miniature bottle of this stuff.

Gerringong this Sundee is Round 3 of the fine ocean swimmers series NSW. And if you enter online, you'll go into the draw for a $50 voucher from and a year's membership of Masters Swimming NSW. By qualifying for the series, you could win a trip to Fiji or Vanuatu, either by winning the series or by random draw of all those who qualify by virtue of doing seven of the nine series swims.

All finishers will have their times weighted for age/sex to produce handicap results for the purposes of the fos series. That is, provided you're wearing "legal" cossies, which are conventional budgies for blokes and "normal" cossies for laydees (no arms, no legs, no flotation material). This is to make it a level playing field, as it were.

Be warned: race day registrations cut-off at 9am, and awgies are strict about this, because punters must be briefed them moved (most of them on foot) over the headland from Werri Beach to Boat Harbour to the start. Don't be late. They are serious about this cut-off time. Get yourself down to Gerringong SLSC at the southern end of Werri Beach.

Northern Beaches orgy

The first month of the new year is our swimmin' surfari along Sydney's Northern Beaches -- Newport... Avalon... Mona Vale... Palm Beach to Whale Beach. It's a Northern Beaches orgy.

And if you're not doing Gerringong, you may prefer Round 2 in the Pittwater Ocean Swim Series at Newport. Another lovely day out on a classic Sydney beach, the kind with red sand from the iron in the local sandstone. Two distances: 800m and 2km.

There are five swims in the Pittwater Series, and if you do at least three of them, you'll go into the draw for a weekend in Byron Bay for the annual swim there in May.

Glistening Dave's oceanswims calendar 2016

Some lucky punters have already received their copies of Glistening David's oceanswims calendar 2016. That means, on January 1, when most of you are holed up in bed in foetal position, head throbbing, just wishing the world will go away, those lucky punters at least will know what day it is.

David has selected his favourite photograrphs from last season from his "formal" swims and his early morning fraternisations in Bongin Bongin Bay to illustrate his 2016 ocean swims calendar. And, this year, Dave's been travelling to Vanuatu and Tonga, so the calendar includes images from there, too.

The calendar includes every swim date we can find in Stra'a, New Zealand and the South Pacific, and a few more besides that we deem relevant or interesting. Pin it on your notice board at work, behind the door in the loo, on the wall in the kitchen, in your home office, your men's shed out the back, your sewing and knitting room, the wall in your hallway, so that you can check swim dates each time you leave home or return.

View New Year special

v200AMROur New Year's View special offers two versions of the world's best low profile swim gog at the best price you'll ever find.

v200lslmainimageBuy a pair of our Fully Sick V200A-MR goggles, and you can have a pair of the Fully Sicks' non-mirrored sibling, the V200A, for $18 – That's more than 25 per cent off.

The V200A is exactly the same as the Fully Sick V200A-MR, except for the mirror coating. We use the Fully Sicks for daytime, when the sun is bright, and the non-mirrored V200A for early morning squad, although both have similar sun-protection properties.

The remarkable thing about View gogs -- apart from how well made they are -- is the quality they offer for the price you pay. Other goggle makers charge twice as much for gogs that aren't half as good as these. That's why we wear Views.
