About the Murray Rose Malabar Magic

This year the Murray Rose Malabar Magic Ocean Swim offers three options in the relatively protected waters of Malabar Bay - NEW 5km, 2.5km and 1km.

  • 5km course is two laps of 2.5km course See maps link here. This swim has limited numbers and you must complete the swim in the allotted time frame. All swimmers must be able to complete the 5km swim within the cut off time of 150mins. If swimmers have not completed the first 2.5km within 75 mins, for their safety, the Race Director reserves the right to not allow them to complete the second lap.

There will be no “on the day” entries in 2021.

Due to COVID restrictions and our safety policy, all entries will be taken online prior to the event, closing at 10am on Saturday, February 20, 2021. Race pack (timing tag and swim cap) collection will take place in the park just prior to your swim commencement time. Please move directly to the start location after collection and follow the signs and announcement regarding movement around the park and beach.

5km race will commence from 8am, 2.5km race from 9am and 1km from 11am.

Due to COVID regulations swims will be commenced using a “rolling start”. Swimmers will be advised of exact start times closer to the event day.

Proceeds from the Malabar Magic benefit children with a disability who learn to swim at 25 Rainbow Clubs across NSW.

What you need to know…

  • Event: Murray Rose Malabar Magic Ocean Swim
  • Organiser: Rainbow Club Australia
  • Date, start time: Sunday, February 21st from 8:00am
  • Race day registration: No entries will be accepted on the beach on swim day This is due to Covid-19 requirements relating to track-and-trace and to minimise social interaction.
  • Distances: 5km, 2.5km, 1km
  • Entry fees:
    • 5km - $85 - minimum age 13 years with confirmation they can complete a 5km swim within the allowed time.
    • 2.5km - $40 - 20+ years, $30 - 13-19 years
    • 1km - $40 - 20+ years, $30 - 10-19 years
    • This year there will be no combination 1km and 2.5km entry option due to COVID-19 requirements so swimmers must select which swim they wish to do.
  • Entries: online only.
  • Online entries close: 10am, Saturday, February 20, 2021
  • Courses: All swims are in the bay at Malabar Beach. 5km course is two laps of 2.5km course See maps link here.
  • Minimum ages: 1km – 10 years, 2.5km and 5km – 13 years
  • Rain date: If conditions prevent the swim going ahead on the scheduled day, the event will roll over to Sunday 18th April. In that case, all entries will roll over to the new date.
  • Swim ready: Participants are asked to arrive “swim ready” and after registration immediately head to the swim start. At conclusion of swim please leave the park as soon as possible to help us comply with social distancing and COVID-19 regulations
  • Under 18 entrants: All entries of entrants under the age of 18 must be managed by a responsible parent or guardian. Parent/guardian must provide their full name and mobile phone number in the Emergency contact field of the online entry form at the time of entry, to indicate their consent to the entry. Entries of swimmers aged under 18 that are not accompanied by these details will not be accepted. NB: Entrants aged under 18 must use the email address of the responsible parent/guardian, not that of the under-18 entrant.

About your entry...

  • We accept Mastercard and Visa only
  • Minimum age is 10 in the 1km event, 13 in the 2.5km and the 5km.
  • Entries in the 5km swim will be limited to 300 swimmers.
  • Online entries close Saturday, February 20, at 10am.
  • There will be NO Entries accepted on-the-day
  • Swimmers with a disability welcome – You are welcome to tell us about your disability, but this is not mandatory.
  • Phone contact – a valid Australian mobile number must be provided with your entry online. Organisers may send SMS messages to entrants advising of changes to event arrangements. If you do not leave a valid Australian mobile number, you will not be notified of changes or other developments with this swim

Swim Teams

Swim Teams can enter in either the 1km or 2.5km swims in the Open Category (no age restrictions). Swim Teams are made up of four (4) people. We will contact you in the week before the event to help you organise your members into groups of 4 swimmers.

Companies, Clubs, Schools and families are encouraged to train and swim together in the team competition. The first team member to enter should pick and share a team name, and all other members of the team should enter the exact team name when they register. There is no extra charge for team entries. Teams may comprise male and/or female swimmers, and all members of a team must finish.

Fundraising as a group

Once you have created four friends in your Swim Team through the registration portal, we encourage you to fundraise as a group.

If you have selected to fundraise, the same team name will be created for you as a Team Fundraising page automatically. You can enter as many as you like into your fundraising team

Teams are encouraged to set a target to raise funds for Rainbow Club. We will be happy to provide tips on fundraising to all our registered swimmers - email [email protected]

The Top swim team and Top Fundraising team will win a fantastic group Captain Cook Cruise.

Under 18 swimmers

Parents/guardians of swimmers aged under 18 must complete the online entry form and provide their full name, their email address and phone number. Such entries must use the email address of the consenting parent/guardian, not that of the Under 18 swimmer.

Water Filling Stations

Rainbow Club takes a positive and strong approach with use of plastics.

We encourage all participants to be self-reliant and bring your own fluids, water, drinks in your own reusable water bottles.

For COVID health practices the only fluids the race organiser will provide is bottled water after the race.

We ask you to support our mission and bring your own fluids.

Support Rainbow Club

Rainbow Club helps children with a disability learn to swim and be safe in the water. We engage qualified teachers to provide subsidised lessons. If you would like to help us make swimming accessible to children with a disability, you can -

1. Donate when paying your entry fee.

When you enter online, you will have the option of making an additional donation to Rainbow Club to support opening new clubs that will help children with a disability learn to swim.

$35 =1 individualised swimming lesson for a child with a disability
$70 = 2 individualised swimming lessons for a child with a disability
$300 = a Term of 9 swimming lessons for a child with a disability

Rain date

If conditions prevent the swim running on February 21, 2021, organisers say they will have a back up date on hold with Randwick City Council of Sunday, April 18, 2021.
